Question:

> I get several errors when I open the SharePoint site. How can I understand what is wrong and fix that?!

Answer:

SharePoint manage all errors in two ways: record in Windows Event Log and provides detailed trace in 12-hive LOG folder (log details are are configured via Central Admistration).

Logs are represented in plain text format and they are very detailed, so you need to use 3rd party tools that simplify filtering and search across log files. There are several tools than manage SharePoint logs, but I'd recommend two tools:

  1. Log Viewer Feature - administrative feature which provides access to logs via SharePoint Central Administration interface. The advantages is that you don't need to use any specific application and all functionality is integrated into web UI.
  2. USL Log Viewer - nice WPF application for viewing SharePoint ULS log files more easily. Supports filtering and easy viewing of data. Must-have application when you don't have access to SharePoint and support guys send you logs only. This is one of my favorite instruments.
